I truly think that if Limbaugh had a dip in his following, it was when he was embraced by the Republican mainstream, and he made two very bad mistakes.
First, he decided to “moderate” his views. Before then, he used sharp-tongued savagery to lash into scoundrels from feminist abortionists to corrupt politicians. He was willing to “call a femiNazi and femiNazi.” When he stopped doing that, he lost a lot of edge.
Second, instead of going after anyone and everyone who fouled up, he embraced the Republican party platform as a baseline, instead of what the rank and file conservatives wanted. Again, this cost him a lot.
Funny... Rush has stated that their numbers are up and more and more low information voters are tuning in to see what all the fuss is about. Many are converted and I have heard them call in and discuss their transformation.

1. Operation Chaos
2. Unwavering conviction that Bambi was going to lose in a landslide last November.
The first one was a big waste of time. Second a big F for Fail.
Both did harm to conservative causes.
