I know I am sounding really ignorant, but I don’t understand. What would the WH or the DOJ want with phone records of the AP? What are they looking for?

I know I am sounding really ignorant, but I dont understand. What would the WH or the DOJ want with phone records of the AP? What are they looking for? Loyalty. Or at least fear driven compliance.
Failing that, a chilling effect on anyone who would dare provide the media with any truth.

As the others have said, they could be looking for leakers, whistle blowers or reporters anonymous sources.
What the Justice Dept. did is a serious breach of the law in that it was not narrowly limited to a specific action okayed by a judge for a warrant.
DOJ could and probably did get many different sources for AP reporters.
