My question is was the Commander who authorized so many of our Special Operations troops to be airlifted into a “Hot LZ” in a Chinook relieved of his command? As far back as Vietnam, we learned to disperse our troops in multiple aircraft (UH-1’s in those days) that were fast moving and mobile. A Chinook is nothing more than a big fat target and should never be used to transport troops in a rescue mission or any other kind of activity where they are subject to enemy fire. To load 20+ Special Opns. troops plus 10-15 more U.S. and Afghan troops on a Chinook and send it into a “Hot LZ” is nothing less than criminal.
They have calling into the local talk radio show, talking about the incident. One said that other officers have expressed opinions that these guys were set up to die.
