From what I have read, the two brothers are alcoholics and, astonishingly, Ariel appears to have been the most capable of the trio.

I believe the other two were ostensibly picked up for outstanding misdemeanors, unpaid traffic ticks or the like.

A guy has three women chained up in his basement for ten years, and the brothers didn't know about it? If they visited the house at all, then they knew about it.
