David Cameron was accused of running scared on gay marriage after the controversial legislation was left out of the Queens Speech.
Downing Street insisted that the lawwhich has already cleared the Commonswould continue its passage through the Lords in the new session of Parliament.
But in apparent recognition of its unpopularity with many traditional Tory voters, there was no mention of it in yesterdays speech setting out the Governments legislative program for the year. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was rejected by more than half of his MPs in a Commons vote in February and was blamed by some for an exodus of traditional Tory supporters to the UK Independence Party in last weeks council elections.

Since Cameron and Tories lost seats in the first round of elections to the fledgling UKIP, it seems it’s clarified his thinking.
