A LARGE meteor was spotted in the sky above Cornwall in the early hours of this morning.
A giant green meteor was spotted by astronomers in the skies above Cornwall
Experts have said the phenomenon was likely to have been debris from Halley's Comet.
The large lump of space rock was seen by people across England and Wales and Twitter was abuzz with reports of sightings.
A meteor spotter with the handle @VirtualAstronomer, wrote "The meteor fireball was witnessed from Cornwall to the Scottish [sic] borders."
A man Tweeting from Nottingham, @TwitFlickR, described it as a "green fireball that lasted about seven seconds."
Closer to home, in Dorset, @Phantomrw808 wrote: "I saw the meteor last night, only for about 3 seconds, it was bright green. #dorset"
@femmegeek from Birmingham said on Twitter: "Thing was huge!!!"
Watch officer Richard Williams said Falmouth Coastguard received a possible flare report last night at about 10pm over The Manacles, at the Lizard, from someone saying they saw a white flashing light which moved across the sky then disappeared.
But he said it was likely to be an aircraft as it was reportedly white and moving linearly.
"I'm pretty certain it wasn't a meteor because we had quite a lot of helicopter activity in the area at that time," he said.
"But we would always encourage people to call us if they think they see something strange and we will look into it to make sure it's nothing untoward."

No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us.
At midnight on the twelfth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile, starting on its way.
And that's how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars - bright green, drawing a green mist behind it - a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilvy, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet.
"The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one," he said. "The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one - but still they come!"
Why would it be green?
I doubt it was made of copper...
Triffids should be showing up any day now.
It was probably Cameron’s morals spewing out.
In that case:
Shhhhhhh...
“Colors of meteors The color of many Leonids is caused by light emitted from metal atoms from the meteoroid (blue, green, and yellow) and light emitted by atoms and molecules of the air (red). The metal atoms emit light much like in our sodium discharge lamps: sodium (Na) atoms give an orange-yellow light, iron (Fe) atoms a yellow light, magnesium (Mg) a blue-green light, ionized calcium (Ca+) atoms may add a violet hue, while molecules of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and oxygen atoms (O) give a red light. The meteor color depends on whether the metal atom emissions or the air plasma emissions dominate. “

I wish someone would make a movie out that rock version of War of the Worlds, better yet to still have Richard Burtons narration.
Forever Autumn, my favorite song.
Green Lantern Coming home?
“Triffids should be showing up any day now.”
Yes, but with rising sea levels, we should have plenty of ammunition to fight them off.
Why not copper? Plenty of nickel/iron out there. Platinum and everything else too...
Yes... I still wonder what it would feel like to find an asteroid with a high concentration of Aurum (#79 on the periodic table).
It was probably inhabited by aliens looking for the little girl’s hopscotch sidewalk.
Aurum, LOL. I had to look at a periodic table...
:-)
The Brits would probably want to do something stupid like calling it “Auruminium”...
Although, looking at the green spectrum from various flame test results, it could be any number of elements. Considering the concentration of copper here, it isn’t much of a stretch to assume there are chunks of it floating around out there.
