Something similar is going on in Sri Lanka.
In Burma it has something to do with ethnic nationalism, even tribalism. The Muslims are associated with Bangladesh and (strangely if you know the recent history) with India.

In Burma it has something to do with ethnic nationalism, even tribalism. It is a bit simpler and more obvious than that. Down in the southern portion of the country in the Kra isthmus there is a largish Moslem population.Moslems have been attempting to kill off or drive out the Buddhists there and have perpetrated some pretty atrocious murders, beheadings and such. It is self and national defense pure and simple.

In Việt Nam there is a small number of indigenous Moslems. They are a few Khmers and the remnants of the old Hindu Cham civilization that flourished in the south until it was overwhelmed by the Kinh (Viets) from the north. Their Islam is as Indonesian Islam was a century ago (and still is in some of the remoter places) and as much Buddhism is in VN now, an overlay on a basically pagan culture. The government is very leery about allowing outside Mohammedans to influence them directly.
