(Reuters) - It's been dubbed the most expensive prison on Earth and President Barack Obama cited the cost this week as one of many reasons to shut down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, which burns through some $900,000 per prisoner annually.
The Pentagon estimates it spends about $150 million each year to operate the prison and military court system at the U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, which was set up 11 years ago to house foreign terrorism suspects. With 166 inmates currently in custody, that amounts to an annual cost of $903,614 per prisoner.
By comparison, super-maximum security prisons in the United States spend about $60,000 to $70,000 at most to house their inmates, analysts say. And the average cost across all federal prisons is about $30,000, they say.

Now we really know why Obumer hasn’t shut Guantanamo down — it wastes money like there’s no tomorrow.
barry will do cartwheels when dhs and tsa and batfe declare war on us citizens but spends 900 grand per inmate at gitmo.
I would love to see the breakdown of costs ...

So, put them on trial ... find them guilty of the crimes specified in the reason for their incarceration and sentence them accordingly or find them innocent and send them home.
Why all these years of holding them without trial?
I can’t believe this figure for even a second...
Guantanamo is not a fancy facility - it’s quite simple. I don’t believe we pay a lease. It is staffed by U.S. military who would be paid if they were sitting at a CONUS base, sitting in the sandbox, or sitting at Guantanamo. It is secured by US Military - same thing.
I can’t believe the military tribunal system would cost that much either.
Smells like politically motivated BS to me. Seems like I remember the Bush administration saying Guantanamo was cheaper that a Federal prison many years ago. I might not remember that correctly, but I have always believed Guantanamo was a cheaper alternative. The defense attorneys would bleed the taxpayers out on these enemy combatants if they were incarcerated on our soil.
As i understand it there are a lot of prisoners on hunger strikes. At $900,000 per terrorist I say allow the hunger strike to follow it’s natural course.
***** “Shut it down!” *****
NEGATIVE .... it is the most Cost Effective Detention Center in the Free World, ideally located and provides a use for our friend in Cuba to bitch about...
I’d pay double what it costs and show you where we still come out ahead $ wise and everywhere else (less measurable ways)
TT
I couldn’t care less.
I do not want them on American soil for any reason.
“I guarantee...less than $10,000 each per year.”
No way!! Not when it cost $13,000 every weekend Joe Biden decides to fly a hundred miles home and back on AF2.
Word!!!
I say we turn them into wind chimes and then sell the lad to Jerry Farewell and let him build a Christian College and amusement park where those devil worshipers were housed

Tried, Exonerated or Convicted, (personally I want them quickly Executed or Sent home) ... but there are always new arrivals and then those that have yet to spill the beans, or those that have spilled the beans and wish to remain protected... (yeah we do that too, we don’t want them, their people want to kill them... so we feed and house them until they decide who they want to kiss ass the most to) again personally Option #1 is viable and I am an available Administrator, I will bring my own ammo if need be, and only ask for the ride to and from, other than that ... no charge.

Didn’t realize that there were “new arrivals”. I thought the camp was static.
How is it even remotely possible that the USA has a military facility in a communist country that is and has been openly hostile to us?
Let that sink in.
Execute them all and shut it down!
Make liberals happy. Release all these terrorists. 50 miles off shore.
That’s about the same as the per-student cost of the unionized Chicago Public Schools.
[[Guantanamo camp burns through $900,000 a year per inmate]]
Wghiel Senior Citizens and disabled peopel and veterans have to get by on as little as $10,000 a year-
Yep- we’ve got our priorities straight-
I could solve that problem with a buck or two worth of ammunition per prisoner...
Probably includes the lease price being paid to Cuba under the original agreement?
