Tennis great Jimmy Connors hints his former fiancée, Americas on-court sweetheart Chris Evert, got pregnant and then had an abortion as they became the biggest stars and the most popular couple in the sport.
The bad boy of tennis reveals in his new memoir, The Outsider, that just weeks before their planned wedding in 1974, An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion, and a decision had to be made as a couple, Connors writes.
Chrissie called to say she was coming out to LA to take care of the issue. I was perfectly happy to let nature take its course and accept responsibility for what was to come
While Connors was 22 at the time, Evert was 19, and raised in a Catholic home. He wrote, Chrissie, however, had already made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future. She asked me to handle the details.
He said he responded, Well, thanks for letting me know. Since I dont have any say in the matter, then I guess I am just here to help.
The situation directly led to the end of their relationship, he continues, and he found himself thinking he wasnt ready to be married. It was a horrible feeling, but I knew it was over. Getting married wasnt going to be good for either of us.
Connors recounts how he told her they were still young and should take a step back. He said she responded coldly, OK, if thats what you think. Ive got a match tomorrow. Not a problem.
He concluded that despite the fact they had battled to stay together, the problem was they were both rising stars Can two No. 1s exist in the same family?

This was a very closely held secret back then. Those who were privy to the situation were inside the inner-inner circle.
Apparently three Number 1’s couldn’t exist in their family.

Move over Paul Anka.
IMHO... it is in really bad taste to discuss this incident in a tell all book.
“This was a very closely held secret back then.”
In my opinion it should still be a closely held secret...unless Mr Conners has cleared this with Ms Evert.
I’d be interested in Chris’s side of the story.
Why would someone drag out the personal details about an old girlfriend for the whole world to see? Does he think he needs to do this to sell books?
This is not the way a gentleman acts.
Don’t forget, Jimmy was the “bad boy of tennis” until McEnroe showed up and everyone forgot about him.
Thanks for sharing Jimmy.
Couldn’t agree more - and a lot of people would have had to sign off and letting this in the book - ghost writer (?), editor, publisher etc. Yet they all thought it a good idea? #smh
My mother loved Chris Evert and thought she was the sweetest, most wonderful young lady. She would not like to hear this news, and she would probably excuse “Chrissie.” My mother also loved bad boy Jimmy.
So, now, we’ll see the “outing” of abortions? Oh, joy./s

and this is a story from him not her...I consider him a louse to report it since she never has.
I don’t know one way or the other but I do know that Chris Evert went on to become a wife and mother.....Overall it seems as though her life has been filled with much pain and instability. Perhaps being a super star sports hero at a young age is not a good thing
Connors a gentleman???
Where have you been for the past 50 years. He was an insufferable brat while still a preteen.

The book’s publisher likely made sure of that.
