The Gulf is more placid by comparison.

OK, that's probably the reason. I like to boogie board and want to try surfing. But there's a lot to be said for white sand beaches and warm, clear waters.

Yeah, I'm from Massachusetts, and we never hear anything about the Gulf here. It's either OBX or Florida. Don't hear much about NJ beaches either.

If you like warm combined with heavy surf it ends at the far southern tip of Hatteras Island. Spanish moss, live oaks, palmetto trees. Not very developed outside the immediate ferry landing area. If you’re looking for tourist stuff or nighlife you’d either need to jump the free ferry over to Ockracoke island or drive 20 miles up the island to Avon and Kinnakeet.
