RICHMOND Virginia Democrats renewed their demands Monday that Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli resign after the Republican gubernatorial candidate belatedly disclosed about $13,000 worth of gifts on Friday that he claimed he forgot to note in four years worth of economic disclosure reports.
They were not as insistent, however, that their own nominee, Terry McAuliffe, match Mr. Cuccinellis complete income tax disclosure earlier this month with one of his own.
State Sen. A. Donald McEachin and Delegate David J. Toscano responded in a conference call to Mr. Cuccinellis revelation Friday afternoon that he failed to report five gifts from 2009 through last year. He spoke to a handful of mostly print journalists who had agreed not to broadcast any audio or video recordings of the conference and use them only to augment the accuracy of their own notes.
Three of them were from Jonnie Williams, the CEO of troubled nutritional supplement maker Star Scientific and a political contributor to Mr. Cuccinelli. They included a $3,000 vacation stay and $1,500 Thanksgiving retreat and dinner at Mr. Williams Smith Mountain Lake vacation home.
Mr. Cuccinelli also made a nominal revision to his 2011 filing to show that $6,711 worth of nutritional supplements he received that year came from Star Scientific, not from Mr. Williams as he had previously reported.
The annual reports listing their business interests, assets, honoraria and gifts are required of elected officials each January under Virginia law. A deliberate violation is a misdemeanor, but an unintended error or omission is not an offense.

“We can certainly call them on their double standard and I agree we should. But we should also be aware that our failings will be magnified beyond proportion so we should seek to minimize those. If we dont hand our enemies a sword they will be less likely to chop us up.”
I agree, but do you really think there are prefect men out there let alone enough of them to fill our political needs?
Good for you. But if a houseguest of mine insisted on paying me for my hospitality I’d consider it an insult.
Hank
nope it was my friends ultra nice second house in Scottsdale and a bunch of us girls went and we kept track of all expenses and split them. no free lunch, “insult” is silly
What tacky friends you have. When I invite people to come and stay with me, I pay, when they invite me to go stay with them, they pay. I guess you can’t help your world view since you have such classless friends.
If we dont hand our enemies a sword they will be less likely to chop us up.It's more like the Dems hand conservatives the sword then watch as they chop up their own candidates.
folk off loser
Guess that’s wh I sleep at night, not padding my expense account not accepting “gifts” and other slushy activities
“Not perfect, but smart enough to know that we shouldn’t give our opponents any more ammunition to use against us. It doesn’t have to be hard. What part of don’t take any money is hard to understand? Same with don’t take any gifts. Surely we can run candidates who have worked an honest living and not bagged expensive gifts from anyone. “
I don’t have a problem with it, as long as the man is doing the job we need him to do and he certiantly has been doing that hes got my vote.
The implication of theses “gifts” is to buy favor but there are many ways to get favor without buying or trading for it. Liberals are quite adept at it in the form of lobbying. There is nothing we can do to stop it from happening to anyone so just drop it.
Cuccinelli did not run claiming to be saint he ran as a constitutional conservative and that he most certantly is!
And that is really the sad part about all this. If Cuccinelli loses this race because of a stupid thing like this, we will have lost another winnable seat, and had a good candidate go down to defeat, not because they were wrong on the issues or had bad ideas for governing, but because some stupid thing like this tripped them up. That kind of stuff drives me nuts. There's no reason for it. We lost two perfectly winnable Senate seats in Indiana and Missouri last election because our candidates weren't smart enough to see and avoid the trap the 'Rats were setting. They weren't wrong on principles, but their political acumen was sorely lacking. We're paying the price for that now in having two uber liberals sitting in those seats in the Senate. We can't afford to have that happen again.
“The problem I have with it is that the ‘Rats will twist it and use it against us, perhaps to the point of not getting our candidates elected. It is bad political strategy to do things that you know the ‘Rats and the media will use against us, most likely by making our candidates into a caricature of who they really are.”
The cheating Rats and dishonest media will uses anything and everything against us. If our guys were saints they would claim a politican has to be willing & able to get dirty and make deals.
There is no way on earth we are going to avoid them going after us just as there is no way we are going to get them to give us a fair shake.
The fact is our politicians are nether saints nor theves their people, and imperfect and flawed as you and I. We can’t change that fact anymore than they can. But as long as they dominate the means of commutations they can bury their own flaws while focusing on nothing but our guys flaws.
Even things we don’t regard as flaws such as resigning for the good of your State.(Sarah)
We must take control of their markets and get our message out or there is no path forward except in collapse.
I can just tell you that if a houseguest - whom I had invited - offered to pay me, I would tell him that if he were looking for paid accomodations, there are several hotels in the area.
Who does this?
When you have friends for dinner do you give them a receipt for the cost of the groceries and labor to cook the meal?
I’ve never heard of such nonsense.
Hank
no, that’s why I said I highly doubt an invitation to a house party for Thanksgiving would be chargeable but a Thanksgiving vacation thingy would be.............really you are twisting things. If you invite me to your usual residence in town, I would not expect to cough up any dough. If you invite me to your second home and we are ordering in, eating out, touring around to Sonoma and all that, dishing out dough all the time, what I am supposed to sit there and let my girlfriend pick up all the tabs and gas and admissions and pink jeep rental like I’m some child? Come on.
Unfortunately Republicans have to hew to the RN “plain Republican cloth coat” lifestyle unless they are independently wealthy. This is the life that Gerald Ford lived for decades as he ascended through the ranks of GOP congressmen. If you are not rich you cannot rub shoulders with high rollers and their lifestyle. TI know this is infuriating when men like George Mitchell come to DC without the proverbial pot to urinate in or a window to throw it out and retire to a custom built mansion hugging the coast of Maine that is almost as grand as Nelson Rockefeller’s and get plaudits equal to one of the 12 Disciples poured on him by a fawning press and political establishment. However, that is the way it is. We are better than these vermin and we have to live that way not just talk the talk.
