President Obama called NBA player Jason Collins Monday to offer his support after Collins announced he's gay, becoming the first openly gay major league professional athlete, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett has learned.
The president offered congratulations and support on Collins' courage and willingness to be the first in the four dominant pro sports to make this announcement.
First lady Michelle Obama also showed her support for Collins on Twitter Monday.
"So proud of you, Jason Collins! This is a huge step forward for our country. We've got your back!" she tweeted, signing it "-mo," which indicates she - not an aide - sent the message.

ESPN has gone all gay, all the time. At 6pm EDT, the main network spent the entire first 18 minutes on this issue, while on ESPN2, where the show “Around The Horn” was going on, they spent the first 13 minutes. There were numerous references to Jackie Robinson and the Movie “42” - one former NBA GM made the unfortunate comment that Jason Collins was a “utility big” - ahem -
It was stunning. They were trying to ram Collins down our throat. Oh, wait....can you say that?
Would he have called if Jason was white?
Chewie has to get in line
Yo, Mo! We got your (silver)back....
There is no reasoning with this kind of twisted mind.
Yay. Now, when do we hand out the medals for the bondage enthusiasts in The Masters? The Moooch makes me sick. What a disgusting woman.
So, it’s all about approving homosexuality and nothing else really matters. Not a good historical precedent of fighting against God on that issue.
Meanwhile, someone develops a new drug for fighting cancer and Moochelle tweets nothing.
Maybe the President wants to get to together with Jason for a ‘cup of coffee.’
Moochelle = beard
I am a regular viewer of Around the Horn and PTI. Both shows used this subject as their lead story. They also spent more than the usual amount of time on this story. I muted the shows until the commentary was over.
All this hoopla (no pun intended) for a guy who averages a pathetic lifetime 3.6 points per game.
Must make Michelle REALLY proud now to be an American. I hope it lasts. I’m feeling left out, like there isn’t anyone in Washington D.C. representing the MOST of us.
Isn’t he the second?
I would say Penn State’s JERRY SANDUSKY was the “first”
open homosexual - Whatta milestone for the gay community!
I guessin’ they don’t count Billy Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Johhny the Ice Skater, and a whole buncha other manly women and womanly men who are making millions in sports
what next- Hollywood?
How about open them closets in Congress and the USSC and obama’s cabinet?
Ooooh
if you watch, attend or buy paraphernalia relating to those professional sports organizations supporting homos... then you are also supporting homos.
NBA just went out the window today.
i’m waiting for the NFL to jump the shark next
(tho, thankfully, Tebow is out from under the jets)
btw, if anyone knows which store Tebow has his investment in, i’ll make sure to stop in and have lunch/dinner.
The celebration of sodomy continues, praised by the media and the liberals. But I repeat myself.
PTI has become the best show on ESPN I think, but they were overboard today. ATH is interesting, I don't personally like it, but I have to grudgingly admit that Riali is talented and smart, even if he is a bit "too kool for school" for my taste. But yes, both were predictable today. Sadly.
one day it will dawn on someone at ESPN or at the NBA that Jason Collins and Jerry Sandusky do have something in common.
One day.....not today....
