California police are hunting for a man after a 8-year-old girl was attacked inside her home Saturday and later died.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's office said that the man was considered armed and dangerous, and authorities are warning residents in the Northern California town of Valley Springs to lock their doors.
He is described as a white or Hispanic male around 6 feet tall, with long gray hair and a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with blue pants.
According to Fox 40, the victim's 12-year-old brother was in the home at the time of the attack and called 911 after seeing an intruder. The girl was found with serious stab wounds and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The county coroner identified the girl as 8-year-old Leila Fowler. Initially she was reported as being 9-years-old, but Coroner Kevin Raggio said Sunday she would have turned 9 in June.
Authorities spent Saturday night and into Sunday conducting a door-to-door sweep of homes scattered across hilly terrain, checking storage sheds and horse stables, and even searching attics.
"It is a difficult area to search, it's rural, remote," sheriff's Capt. Jim Macedo said.
Reverse 911 calls and Nixle mass notifications alerted area residents about the incident and the search for the suspect, officials said.
"I was working on my tractor and a CHP copter kept flying over my house," area resident Roger Ballew, 35, told The Associated Press on Sunday, referring to the California Highway Patrol.
A SWAT team showed up at his house Saturday night and told him to stay inside, Ballew said.
"It was nerve-wracking, I didn't sleep well," he said.
Investigators on Sunday were interviewing several people, but no suspects have been named.

lemme guess, her mother’s boyfriend
This really is an impossible area to search. It’s the area immediately downstream of Camanche reservoir. Lots of canyons, old farm buildings, abandoned semi trailers, etc.
Not far from where the “Speed Freak Killers” buried their victims too.
Probably an illegal. Kalefornia seems to love them so much.
God bless this child.
I caution everyone to mind their comments until more information is known lest they end up looking like complete idiots.
You’re interfering with an old FReeper tradition :o)
Maybe the brother?
You, on the other hand, are fulfilling said Freeper tradition :o(
Read elsewhere the girl was one of seven children, parents very involed in Little League and in the community.

"It was nerve-wracking, I didn't sleep well," he said.

I know these Kalifornies will have a lot more peace of mind than most folks...
...Just think how totally-freaked out they would be if the people were allowed to have guns in the home...
...Or more than seven rounds...
Don't get me started...
“stay inside and lock the door”
Isn’t it nice that in land of gun-control, we’re told to cower in our homes.
How about:
“Strap on your gear and pay attention!”
Every single adult interviewed on the local news tonight said that they were armed and not too worried about their door locks.
If you're cowering in your own home, it's your own fault.
not me sunshine...
My guess would be that every house in Valley Springs has multiple guns. This would also hold true for most of the town near by, and to the east.
Stockton, to the west, would be another story.
well that could be too
It takes the sheriff 45 minutes to get to our place ao we are armed and ready, here in the northern California foothills.
Did you not post this? “were told to cower in our homes.”?
