Last year, Curtis Granderson of the Yankees had 138 hits in 596 official at-bats, for a batting average of .232. His average was severely impacted by the 195 times he struck out. So, let’s just call those strikeouts “base hits” and add that 195 to the 138 he was already credited with. That gives him 333 hits, for a batting average of .559. Now Curtis feels better and the Yankees feel better. It’s a win-win.
It’s all well and good as long as you “call” strikouts base hits for everyone, and adjust for previous seasons the same way.
