This type of fraud isn't all that new.

I have older relatives that grew up in a coal mining area. It wasn't all that unusual for somebody to lose a finger, one way or another, accidentally-on-purpose, for cash payout compensation.

I saw a show years ago about a rash of such incidents in a sleepy Florida town. Probably in the 1960s. Apparently, it was quite the topic of conversation amongst insurance agents across the nation. Very disparate and unrelated incidents, except for monkey see-monkey do aspect. And the $$$, of course.
