Remember the Beatles? Paul McCartney’s first backup band? Paul now had a new band, and he would play a role in this era as he did in the Sixties, although the role would be a lot less revolutionary. He didn’t have John Lennon’s cynicism or mordant sense of humor, which meant that the Smiling Beatle would smile all through this era. This song pretty much defines what he was about. It came in at #24 on its way to #1.

In its earliest incarnation 40 years ago, it was known as “Jesus Rock”, and this tune was a welcome respite to all that Disco. It came in at #2 this week.
