Did not know that, Spel! Says a lot about him. IIRC, he was disciplined as an Ensign for some reason - can't remember what. Still made it to the top of the heap.

I always liked the episode of "Victory at Sea" on the Battle of Midway. They said that Nimitz "deduced" that the Japanese would attack at Midway. Of course, the info regarding the breaking of the Japanese codes had not been declassified when the series was aired.

Admiral Nimitz ran a ship aground in the Phillipines in his early years in the Navy. I do not remember the details but there were extenuating circumstances. He is one of the few whose career survived after running a ship aground. As I am sure you already know, running a ship aground is usually a career-ender. I, for one, am extremely happy that the Navy chose not to end his career.

He seemed like such a warm, personable guy, very down to earth and not full of himself. He smiled a lot and seemed genuinely happy to be talking to us as opposed to having to listen to the stuffed-shirts who were there trying to make him go to the grandstand. He ignored them. Even though he was retired and in civvies they knew that they could not make him do anything that he didn’t want to do. ;-)
