World Team Tennis still exists, although it lacks the notoriety it had in its early years when Billie Jean King played for the Philadelphia Freedoms. Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote this for Billie Jean, but unfortunately by the time of its release as a single, the Philadelphia team had moved to Boston to become the Lobsters.
The vocal melodic line is a bit nondescript but features some interesting counter-melodies via over-dubbing. It’s the string line that does most of the work, and it’s the most interesting part of the song. It came in at #2 this week.
