Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev managed to say just one word to a federal judge when charges were filed against him in a makeshift courtroom held at the side of his hospital bed, "No."
No, he could not afford an attorney.
As a result, Tsarnaev, 19, who is facing the possibility of the death penalty for his alleged role in last week's terror attack, will be represented by one of the most experienced and well respected public defenders in the country, Miriam Conrad.

Public defenders are usually not the best lawyers because the pay is low, compared to other attorney pay. Who is making the decision as to whom is representing him?
good question: who’s payign for all this?
I expected Gloria Allred.
Two words. The Saudi’s!
Let the circus begin!
bee ess he can’t afford a lawyer, al quaida can
pay and quality of representation have nothing to do with one another. Experience is what counts. Public defenders have tons of experience are in court all the time and usually are doing the job because they love the work, not because they are in it for the spoils. You have shown your total ignorance with your assumption. If you are in trouble, a PD is just what you want
I wonder if she will try to appeal to the liberalism of the Massachusetts jurors by saying that he was driven to insanity by the “right wing.” That approach might also make her a national hero of the left.
Its out of "Obama's Stash" which he thoughtfully took from you! IOW TAXPAYERS!!!
“Who’s paying for all this”? You and me. Since he will be tried in federal Court, all the costs including the Public Defender will be paid by the U.S. Taxpayer.
SO glad I am in the group!
Well respected by whom? Other islamists?
HEY! I thought we had a sequester on?
Of course had the guy been shot and killed in the boat all this would be moot.
From that I have personally seen, criminal defense attorney’s that have the most experience usually start their career in a prosecutors office and then jump to criminal defense because of the BUCKS.
So, I disagree. They are in it for the spoils, not for some sort of altruistic motivations. Are some? Perhaps. But none that I have seen.
Well, there are public de*enders and there are public de*enders—by all accounts this in an excellent one,
and someone who is well-versed in what it takes to
“de*end” a terrorist, as she’s already done it, albeit an
unsuccess*ul one.
So here we start Phase One, the lengthy (believe me , it’ll
be lengthier than we can imagine now) preparation where every possible mitigation o* circumstances surrounding Dzhokar’s
respective “guilt” will be exploited: we already see, in broad outline, what the arguments will likely be: hapless victim o* his older brother’s evil designs against America.
A vulnerable kid brother who really knows nothing about
whatever global jihadist groups aided abetted and/or trained his brother in how to make a bomb and detonate it to do maximum damage.
Older brother is now conveniently dead, and younger brother
now conveniently and literally unable to speak and “de*end himsel*”, and you’ve got a per*ect mix *or a de*ense that already has a LOT going *or it, in the terms in which our existing judicial system operates. The de*ense team may already have assessed that getting their client a mere prison term is a slam dunk, so the trial may proceed apace.
Consider how much harder the de*ense o* Major Hassan and KSM will be, and consider that, *or that reason, neither o* them has even YET come to trial. Much easier to bring to trial the Shoe Bomber Reid, and Dzohkar, who can’t and may never be able to “speak” on his own behal*. And the album o* pictures we will be treated to as the weeks and months go by will ALWAYS include the one seen here: the innocent, sweet visage o* the kid wearing a red *lower on his graduation robe.
All this means if that they won’t be able to use inadequate defense as grounds for appeal. The evidence against him is overwhelming.
