The 80’s were dark and serious in a lot of ways. The Carter recession, more Cold War brinksmanship, an assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, AIDS awareness, the crack cocaine epidemic and gangs, the death of Rock and Roll...

I was a kid! I remember it like this:

To me, AIDS was something bad in Africa. Drugs and gangs were something bad in California. No one ever got sent home for eating a poptart in the shape of a gun. And the only crime was how much White Rain volumizing mousse extra hold I used to get my hair to look like Kelly's in the movie Weird Science.

yeah, I remember seeing Escape From New York when it came out in ‘81. VERY dark and “serious” for what was supposed to be 1997.
