Iowa GOPers: Cut pay of justices who made gay marriage decision

Several Republicans in the Iowa House of Representatives are pushing to cut the pay of the Iowa Supreme Court justices who ruled in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in 2009 — though they contend that it’s not meant to punish the justices.

Rep. Tom Shaw, a Republican, said that the bill was meant “to maintain the balance of power” between the different branches of government in the state. ”We’re just holding them responsible for their decision, for going beyond their bounds,” he said.

-----

The justices “trashed the separation of powers” with their unanimous Varnum v. Brien decision and implementation of same-sex marriage without a change in state law banning any marriages expect between one man and one woman, added Rep. Dwayne Alons, R-Hull.

Their amendment to House File 120, the judicial branch budget bill, would lower the salaries of the four justices on the seven-member court who were part of the unanimous Varnum v. Brein decision to $25,000 – the same as a state legislator.

Tom Shaw, the legislator mentioned in the article, introduced articles of impeachment, and the Republican leadership in the House buried them in committee.

He’s my state rep, I’m happy to say.

And NO, you can’t have him! :-)

The decision needs to be overturned by whatever means necessary. Time Magazine would go nuts.

So if you don’t vote how we want you to vote we will cut your salary? This does not seem right.

Perhaps it’s the legislating from the bench that is the offending point.

I believe this is one area where it will be overturned and the people will vote and provided people contribute gay marriage will be ended in Iowa provided the Supreme Court doesn’t go Roe V Wade on Prop 8 and create some mythical right to gay marriage.

What is frustrating is that we were so close to winning battles in MD, MN, ME, and WA which in all those state the traditional marriage got more votes than our Presidential Candidate by double digits even though we were outspent considerably. If we’d had a candidate that would’ve used social issues like Obama did and really fought not just on dry fiscal grounds but drove home the war on religion message the results on these initiatives could’ve been different but instead we conservatives wasted hundreds of millions of dollars on a candidate that didn’t lay a finger on Obama even after spending a billion dollars. If the state by state initiatives had had even 1% of that to get the message out we’d not be facing the “inevitability” crap argument. You don’t win by praying and hoping alone. David didn’t cower and pray for God to send lightening bolts to defeat Goliath. He faced the giant and took his head.

They violated their oaths and played legislator. So, it’s only fair to pay them what a legislator makes.

“We can hope...”

They will be voted out, all of them.

I was born and raised there. Grew up in Newton, Iowa, where Maytag was fueling the city with large sums of money manufacturing washers, dryers, dishwashers and microwave ovens, not to mention the Maytag Bleu Cheese!

Plant 1, plant 2, R&D and headquarters -— Gone!

Now, all but the Bleu Cheese is in Mexico.

Maytag was one of my customers. I visited Newton four or five times annually.

I never saw a more confused company. The new executive they brought in didn't like Newton or Iowa, for that matter. The company made a series of other bad investments that didn't pay, yet there was a curious arrogance amongst the office and managerial people.

Then, there was the autoworkers who didn't give a fig about the company's health. A high school mate was a union steward and gave me a funny look when I asked why the employees didn't look after production. “Not our job,” he said.

How do you know where I am? Regardless, Bleu refers to the process of making the cheese and the molding process, not the cheese itself.

Maytag BLUE Cheese. There You happy?

Maytag Blue/Bleu/Blew/Bloo cheese is the best!

Sure and, while we're at it, let's give the uber-libs at Salon something to write about.

I appreciate the sentiment however a dumb idea. Just vote not to retain them. Much like the three from two years ago.

A fourth came up for a vote just last November. He was retained. It wasn't close.

So, since Iowa is just fine with Sodomite "marriage" now, some of us apparently decided to shift into full-goofball mode. (As if this helps the cause?)
