(Reuters) - The name of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was listed on the U.S. government's highly classified central database of people it views as potential terrorists. But the list is so vast that this did not mean authorities automatically kept close tabs on him, sources close to the bombing investigation said on Tuesday.
Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in a police shootout early Friday, while his younger brother Dzhokhar, 19, was captured later that day. Prosecutors say the brothers, ethnic Chechens who had been living in the United States for more than a decade, planted two bombs that exploded near the finish line of the marathon on April 15, killing three people and wounding more than 200.
The sources said Tamerlan Tsarnaev's details were entered into TIDE, a database maintained by the National Counterterrorism Center, because the FBI spoke to him in 2011 while investigating a Russian tip-off that he had become a follower of radical Islamists.
The FBI found nothing to suggest he was an active threat, but all the same placed his name on the "Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment" list. The FBI has not said what it did find about Tsarnaev.
But the database, which holds more than half a million names, is only a repository of information on people who U.S. authorities see as known, suspected or potential terrorists from around the world.

Efficient gov't at work.
Coming to your healthcare soon.
We sure can't export all of those consumers.
Well,...clearly we don’t have enough workers to go thru these gigantic databases.
This is interesting that Hosenball is writing for Reuters, a British news service. In the late 1970’s or early 1980’s, he and CIA marxist turncoat Philip Agee were thrown out of England as national security threats.
Hosenball has specialized in intelligence matters, terrorism, etc. but I have never heard of him being before a congressional committee, under oath, to tell about his known working affiliation with DGI-asset Agee.
Has he turned away from aiding the communists, or is he still sympathetic to them? His access, as noted in this article, to western intelligence systems and tactics raises my antennae.
Any one know if Hosenball has left the Left and poses no threat to us re his reporting on intelligence matters?
DUHHHH!
TIDE and FBI should switch databases.
Forgot to credit The Drudge Report for the link to the article.
If Bush had been president they would have blamed him for not connecting the dots.
When was it declassified?
Now we can see how the media creates public’s perceptions. All of them. Everybody’s! The Boston incident was a clear consequence of Obama’s worldview and his policies. Who will say it where it counts? Who will repeat it, like they once repeated endlessly the details of the High Crime that they judged to be the Watergate break in?
Nothing’s obvious. Americans must be spoonfed their perceptions by the boobtube hairy talking heads, or else sunrise and sunset don’t register, don’t happen, don’t exist.
Next, considering Zero’s multiple connections to Al-Harbi, and that the Obama admin instantly began using the “lone wolf” meme, what did Obama know and when did he know it?
Next, where did the money come from that paid for this operation, given that the Tsarnaev’s were supposedly poor enough to live on government assistance, but had nice cars?
I hope our country’s LEO’s are able to operate a real investigation without interference.
Boston bomb suspect's name was on classified government watch lists
"Classified" is a powerful word.
Occasionally, "classified" means the gov is hiding information because they know US Citizens wouldn't approve of their actions.
For instance, Congress takes lavish vacations on taxpayer money and calls those trips "classified missions".
Draw your own conclusions about why this young man was on a classified gov watch list.
” The FBI found nothing to suggest he was an active threat”
Tick....Tick....Tick
Thanks LucyT...this is really getting interesting.
All the connections that are being put together on this is not going to bode well for the won....I wonder if the yellow stream media is going to be able to keep all of this under wraps for their messiah?
Yep, thinking the same thing here.
Well I would have to admit, TIDE typically gets my cloths pretty clean.
“Fewer than 5 percent of the TIDE entries were U.S. citizens or legal residents, according to a description of the database on the NCTC website.”
5% is about 25,000. Boston metropolitan area is less than about 1-1/2% of the US population, which would equate to less than 400 on the list known as being in the Boston area. The big question is why they didn’t look at the people on the list in the area as a starting point - or did the politically correct rules in place prevent them from looking for people thought by someone to be tied to terrorist - if they were in Zero’s protected group(s). How they couldn’t have matched his pictures from their files to the pictures of suspects raises questions that need to be asked - and answered no matter how embarrassing to Zero and his administration.
