After society collapses, one wonders what these people who work on such pressing problems in our present society will actually do. With no discernible skills, I suppose that most will just die out, which would almost make it worthwhile. I wonder what ever happened to the descendants of the Roman senators.

We don’t know - yet. Hopefully we will find out soon. The problem is that 6th and 7th century in Europe only has at most 2 or 3 historians.

Think about that for a second. Imagine if the only thing recorded for the previous two centuries (Back before Victoria), was a massive gap in the record.
