Canada: Terror Suspects Supported By Al Qaeda Elements In Iran, Authorities Say
April 22, 2013 | 2033 GMT
The two suspects arrested and charged by Canadian authorities on April 22 for allegedly planning an attack on a passenger train in the greater Toronto area are not Canadian citizens and received direction and guidance from al Qaeda elements in Iran, officials with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said at a news conference, CBC reported. The arrests were made following a joint operation between Canadian and U.S. authorities, and the suspects, Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser, have reportedly been under surveillance for more than a year. Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran in September 2012, but officials said there is no evidence that the plot in Canada was state-sponsored.
