Tony Orlando had first gained the charts in 1961 with a song that is pretty much forgotten today. He had spent the Sixties as a record executive with CBS and returned to singing in 1970 backed up by some female singers. Due to the terms of his CBS contract, Orlando could not use his name on the recordings, so they were released under the name Dawn until Orlando found out that there were no fewer than six other groups using that name. When Orlando got his TV show, the background singers discovered that Tony had been grossly underpaying them for years, and they fixed that problem in a hurry. It came in at #1 this week.
