You misunderstand my point.

In a legitimate terrorist attack, one by determined and skilled terrorists, this would have been an event with scores, perhaps hundreds, of fatalities.

That same day 27 were killed by a single bomb in a Baghdad cafe.

That's more in keeping with a genuine terrorist attack.

The Boston bombs were so grossly underpowered they could not have been made in in any serious attempt to create mass casualties. Either they were part of a deliberate political Kabuki theater attack to muscle congress into buckling under and voting for gun confiscation, or the bombers were provided with fake high explosives as part of a failed sting.

Look at the photos! There is an unbroken picture window withing a matter of feet of the bomb!

This was filmed very close to the center of the "blast", through unbroken windows:

I don't "know" but I do know who delivered a flat affect 3 minute insipid statement on the bombing. I do know who tried to make political capital blaming his opponents' sequester, and I do know who didn't get really angry and passionate until the last act of the play, the overwhelming passage of gun confiscation on a tide of emotional reactions to the Boston Marathon massacre, failed. That rated a pull out all the stops and employ all the props 13 minute long rant.

This is a bomb that was designed to inflict minimal casualties or dud entirely.

I doubt that was the intent. If it didn't work as they hoped it's because they weren't very skilled bomb makers. (thank God!)

I would very much like to think they were simply incompetent.

I worry that they were patsies in an FBI/BATFE sting gone wrong. They wouldn't be the first dupes given fake explosives and egged on into planting a dud to give the agencies another notch on their anti-terrorist trophy.

But what I fear is that the attack was a deliberate act designed by the left (pick an actor for this role) to force congress' hand into disarming patriotic Americans.

Who on the left would you put above sacrificing a few children for the Greater Goal of a totalitarian communist America?

You have thought through the mechanical implications.

Now take it one step further. Think through the implications of knowingly planting an underpowered bomb.

ALL of the legal and physical risks of a big bomb, with minimal destructive effect.

I say physical risks because having it blow up in your face while building or placing an underpowered small bomb will kill you just as dead as a big bomb.

I say minimal destructive effect not to minimize the 3 deaths and numerous grave injuries, but only to contrast it to what an equivalent volume of even low grade commercial explosives would have wrought.

Either these guys thought they were planting a big bomb or they wouldn't have bothered. If they were knowingly planting a small bomb, it wouldn't have needed to be as bulky as a pressure cooker, something more soup can sized would have sufficed and been a lot easier and safer to smuggle in and place.

Why would they think it was anything but a big bomb? It certainly wasn't because they went to the AQ web sites to learn how to deliberately build an underpowered pressure cooker bomb! SOMEONE provided them with inert explosives.

It wouldn't be the first time.

And the implications of that are bad, very bad.

That's what I thought but I'm hearing things about "beauty products". That would seem to indicate H₂O₂ (hair bleach) which is used in formulating "mother of Satan", Acetone peroxide, or TATP for short. Nasty stuff and a favorite of Islamic terrorists, the only place they could have purchased any quantity of smokeless powder would have been a gun store selling reloading supplies. That's kinda hard to believe since the shelves have been bare for months now.

Big brother had gone to Russia for six months, anybody know when he got back? That's probably when the two started planning their attack and buying their supplies.
