If reports are true they had been here more than ten years, it is likely they had green cards or may have even become US Citizens (making deportation near-impossible)

It would and it does. But Massachusetts is a Sanctuary state, one of many Democrat run hives in which local authorities refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
