Her statement was offensive, but it always bothers me when people can lose jobs for their free speech, when that speech is deemed offensive.

If there is any evidence that her beliefs impacted her performance of her job, then fire her. If she had said this at work, fire her.

Of course, I know people get fired all the time for things they put on facebook.

We have a Constitutional right to free speech but we do not have a constitutional right to a job.

It always bother me when someone can’t excercise their freedom by firing someone who exercised their free speech.

She is/was a public employee. Big difference there. If a private sector employee made such remarks and the private sector employer chose to weather the PR storm, that’s their business. Employed by a government? No way, a majority of the people paying her salary belong to the group disparaged.

Of course, given the weaselly wording, she’s probably not actually been fired.

Then perhaps they should fire her because she can’t construct an english sentence. “Oh well....its most of the whites who is getting blown away.”
Should our educators be held to a standard of literacy?

So you don't care if a nasty, racist woman works, mentors, and nurtures children? How could her attitude NOT affect her performance? Over the decades, I have written dozens if not hundreds of job and performance evaluations. Attitude ALWAYS shows up in performance. Negative attitude ALWAYS shows up in negative performance.

Employers should have the right to fire anyone who makes their business look bad. Of course, this is the public school system, so she's likely on leave with pay until hey figure out where to shunt her after the public eye wanders elsewhere.

She could have made a political statement without it being offensively racist, and then she wouldn't be in hot water. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, but there is responsibility associated with that freedom, too. You have the right to say the dumbest, most hateful thing you can imagine, but your employer also should have the right to dissociate him/herself from you if you do so in public.
