Does national tragic events confirm the saying that the month of April can "break one's heart?"

T.S. Eliot said, “April is the cruelest month,” probably harking back to Chaucer.

April 20th tends to be special too. Hopefully April got it all out of it’s system already.

I guess because April is the time when folks begin to go outside more, and with the increasing warmer and longer days.

I despise the misuse of the word “tragedy”, which is everywhere now.

Attacks cannot be tragedies. A tragedy is an accident or natural event that has a horrible outcome.

The bombing in Boston was an attack, a horrible event. It is properly described as:

Atrocity
Barbarism
Murder
Evil
Carnage
Bloodbath
Butchery
Massacre
Slaughter

It is not a disaster, a tragedy, an unfortunate event, nor a calamity.

I wish we could could a few journalists that were fluent in English.

I would still include “tragedy” as well, for those who were affected directly by the bombing attack which were beyond their control.

For your correction, “tragedy” would also belong to all of the above as well.

This horrible attack came unexpected, so I would include it in the list of words, the word “tragedy”.

Yes.

Still interesting...it might be as some said people moving around more and historically, it was the first good weather for military campaigns and to break winter quarters. Sept would follow with a moderating of summer heat and preparing to go into winter quarters.

April 20th tends to be special too.

On that day in 1898, President McKinley signed a Congressional resolution calling on Spain to withdraw from Cuba. The war began the next day.

Well, I do not concur on the use of the word tragedy to refer to an attack by the very nature of it being intentional. For some it may have been a surprise, but not for all. From the view of an individual personally injured it can be tragic experience, but not so much with the event itself.

I like to make a clear differentiation between horrible events occuring without intent and horrible events occuring with intent. We have so many words that allow us to do just that.

I agree and have always agreed with this. To use any other description, to me, is detached from the hard reality. The affect or consequences can be “tragic” or “calamitous” or “devastating” - but the event itself is quite different.

(The second most misused word used by reporters during any story of high emotion is “literally”.)

Some good things happened in mid-April as well. On April 19 1775, the American Revolution began. And the Battle of San Jacinto took place on April 21, 1836. Had the Texans not won that fight, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah and Nevada would probably be part of Mexico today.
