I am not sure whether the barricade on the mailbox is bent or just turned/tipped. From a quick glance, the barricade appears about 45 degees from the curb line and partially tipped, which might make it appear bent (or more severely bent than it really is).
Yes I just noticed in #56 that they have half the grate that goes around the tree pulled up and it is sitting behind the guy with the yellow boots so the bomb may well have been under the grate. I would think that would have greatly suppressed the damage of the bomb but also explains the horrific leg injuries if it was below people standing over it.

Furthermore the Fox 5 pictures, reportedly crime photos from the FIRST bomb also show shrapnel/bb’s imbedded into a grate. I therefore theorize that the bombs were placed well before the race under grates and police need to look for who was in the area in the nights before the race happened.

a pressure cooker isn’t exactly small. this wouldn’t be your typical backpack. pressure cooker would really stick out a lot and be very heavy if full of whatever plus ball bearings. so you’re talking about a backpack looking like the equivalent of several textbooks inside. he’d really stick out in a crowd I think (and likely be bumping people. Several devices? Not likely a 1 man job. And, it seems by not claiming credit, the goal is to add to the FUD. if you set the device in advance, how much time do you have to drop it?
if you’re leaving a bomb somewhere, would you really put it on the curb , where I would imagine you’d be seen by a lot of people and/or cameras?

This photo is the second explosion. Notice that 'Cracker Barrel' is left of 'Forum', separated by blue awnings. First bomb went up the street (right) where the international flags are. YOU CAN SEE THE SMOKE (AND FLAGS) FROM THE FIRST BLAST IN THE FAR UPPER-RIGHT HAND CORNER IN THE PHOTO! This is what is creeping me out: The flare from blast two seems inland from the street or perhaps it was forced out that direction, away from the street?
That mailbox probably has a projected service life of 30-40 years probably, weathering knucklehead plow drivers, in the winter salt and every other abuse. Besides, it was probably corner on the blaster, what would it take to take you off your feet...you can trust to mailbox will take ten times that -it’s bolted down.

The force of a half dozen people, violently thrown and/or falling against both barriers would seem the only likely way to bend it like that. If it was a pressure wave alone, I would think that the chairs behind as well as the mailbox would have been more disrupted, all having much greater surface area. I just don't think it likely that the force could have come from in front of that barrier.

Wouldn’t the grate been blown up, out and away from the explosion? Or are you saying the bomb might have been temporarily stowed away there?
