I agree, ball bearings come from rotating equipment and that is a rarity in Afghanistan. You just don’t use ball bearings unless they’re plentifull. Now, buckshot would be a different matter.
In WWII we sent B-17s just to demolish Hitler’s ballbearing manufacturing plants, that’s how important they are.
Even in the US, ballbearings are not easy to come by unless you visit a dump and go looking for them.
I’ve seen steel balls sold as slingshot ammo.Available at Walmart and other places.

I read it wasn’t ballbearings - it was BBs. They are very easy to come by.

Do a Amazon search for ‘magnetix toys’. A few sets of these and you’ve got scores of fairly large ball bearings.
The bearings I saw photos of with regard to this event looked more like BBs.
