The bomb that almost got me years back was your basic group of 12 gauge shotgun shells hooked up to a blasting cap ~ it 'misfired' ~ but if it'd been a full hit there'd been shot all over the place.

You put a bomb like that inside a plastic bag of kerosene or diesel and there'd be shot all over the place and a fire ball.

Counterterrorism officials are idiots.

TSA isn't counter-terrorism. It's just goobermint flunkies collect a union paycheck.

The REAL counter-terrorism people we'll never hear about except the occasional highly filtered and adjusted report.

If the damage on impact is so bad that limbs must be amputated, this is not a shotgun blast. The “balls” are big projectiles. That fits the pattern for a Claymore.

Said that most have something like 50 meter killing range over a 60 degree arc. And that as much as 20% of the balls can blow back instead of forward. That puts the perps in danger of shooting themselves.

They are made all over the world including ChiComs.

Look, a few years in the Infantry taught me everything I need to know about a Claymore ~ BUT the cutting range here was, according to reports, about 20 to 30 feet ~ more like a shotgun shell, or blackpowder bomb. Until we hear more we don't know if we are dealing with pellets, pachinko machine balls, or something more like the innards in a Claymore.

The black haze coming out of those two that went off looks like it could be black powder ~ easily made in New York city from materials readily found in grocery stores, bodegas, gas stations, and bio supply stores serving schools, research labs and hospitals.

Likely the core was wrapped together with duct tape.

While Bloomberg was going after long guns and sodas over 16 ounces the mad bombers were on the loose picking up their stuff during lunch.

Guess we will see, but I doubt this is homebrew bomb.

I saw photo’s of the explosion, they did not look like black powder.

The wounds I saw looked like very large projectiles caused them. There were reports of steel and lead balls. They did not say steel & lead shot. There is a difference.

The blast caused the glass windows along the street to shatter and flew many feet. The glass caused many of the injuries.

OK, I quit for now. I saw some injuries that could have been glass. But there were reports of steel & lead balls.

One report said the explosives were in the trash cans along the road.

Guess we will see.

Did you see the Boston.com video from their site? I slowed the bomb blast down and you could see the fire blast followed by the smoke. So surely people were burned. That flame, though short lived, reached the second floor.

yup ~ use agar agar instead of charcoal and you get a bit more acceleration in the burn and it’ll do that. plus, gasoline.

Yep we have to wait and see. New info is coming in slowly. Tomorrow maybe.
Reports on deaths is slim too.
There are many runners that are from foreign countries, those relatives have to be notified, it will take awhile.
Have a safe and good night.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2013/04/16/boston-marathon-explosion-live-updates/#liveblog-entry-11839 Shot ~ shrapnel ~ nails.

Impromptu but deadly load. Now, for the 'splosive part. Still betting on medium quality black powder. This is not the sort you fire in a weapon but something you clean out a bit for your better sort of fireworks.

Not available in New York but Joe Biden's Delaware has that stuff for sale all the time on the Eastern Shore.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2013/04/16/boston-marathon-explosion-live-updates/#liveblog-entry-11839 They are now telling us these were pressure cooker bombs. The article I referenced says they work really well because you can put low pressure explosive materials in them and get a much bigger bang!

Yes, I could see how that would work.

Now they are saying that there were only 2 devices and both of them exploded, other reports said as many as 5 might not have exploded. Go figure.
