Marco Rubio catches Potomac Fever [Amnesty]
BIZ PAC Review (West Palm Beach, Florida) ^ | April 15, 2013 | Jonathon Moseley

Posted on 04/15/2013 12:23:37 PM PDT by Moseley

It’s called Potomac Fever. Senator Marco Rubio – seduced by the establishment – is leading the charge for amnesty for illegal immigrants. Rubio took the April 14 Sunday news shows by storm. But the senator degenerated into pure political spin.

First, Rubio claims that this plan is not amnesty, because trespassers have to “qualify.” How do they qualify? They fill out a form. And they have to continually steal a job from a U.S. citizen. They have to remain employed, while tens of millions of American citizens are out of work. They must pay taxes. But they can’t be turned down. (If they have a criminal record? See “waiver” below.)

Second, Rubio insists that illegal aliens have to “earn” the temporary (probationary) legal status. How do they ‘earn’ it? If they file the form, they’ve earned it. But wait! They also have to renew their status by filing again later.

Third, if a bank robber is caught, does he get to keep the money? Suppose a robber gets to keep all the money he obtained illegally, gets forgiven, and does not go to jail. Is that amnesty? Will illegal aliens have to pay back all the money they earned illegally in the U.S.A.? Nope. What do you call that?

Fourth, Rubio claims that illegal aliens don’t get anything under the Gang of Eight’s proposal but the chance to apply for a green card. Yet, from Rubio’s own explanation, 11 to 20 million illegal aliens will instantly gain the legal right to take a job in the U.S.A. from a U.S. citizen. They will have legal status to live and work in the U.S.A., after showing contempt for our nation’s laws.

Millions of honorable foreigners, who respect our country, will be left waiting in their home countries. Suckers! They applied legally to join our nation. Meanwhile, disrespectful gate crashers who show contempt for the U.S.A. can stay, live and work here. Rubio insists that these illegal aliens get nothing but the chance to apply for a green card. That’s not even competent political spin.

‘Temporary’ status will never be taken away. And of course these foreigners can keep having babies on U.S. soil. Those children, U.S. citizens, can then petition to make their parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents U.S. citizens.

Fifth, immigration law provides for waivers. The applicant can always petition the CIS (formerly INS) to grant a waiver. So the rules aren’t serious. And will Congress have the political will to enforce any of these rules?

Finally, the whole problem here involves people who broke the rules. Naïve utopians dream up complex rules. But gate-crashers won’t follow those rules, either. What kind of citizens will such people become if they broke our laws to get here?

His “conservatism” didn’t last long, me thinks you have a point.

What frustrates me about this article, and some of the conversation, is that there is more heat than light. This issue, for a number of reasons, might end the country. It’s too important to just fire ridiculous talking points out.

A path to citizenship with voting rights and welfare rights is one thing - and cannot be tolerated under any circumstance - but the opinion that mass deport is not happening is another, and may have to be ultimately tolerated. Only those serious enough about stopping a path to citizenship and a continuing welfare state among illegals will acknowledge these differences. Anything else is bluster.

I don’t know how far Rubio goes on citizenship and government bennnies. But to me, those are huge huge huge things to know.

Yep. Rubio showed his cards vis a vis amnesty several years ago.

"It was always going to be a problem with Rubio. You could smell it a mile away. I remember when he was being pimped here; I was thinking I didn’t trust him with illegal amnesty. And here we are."

Indeed. And it was the same with just about all of our recent presidential candidates like Santorum, Newt, etc. I could never, ever trust them after hearing their responses to the I.I. questions. As you said, "You could smell it." Ironically, it was Mitt Romney who had the most Constitutional position on I.I.

The latest disappointment on the issue is Rand Paul. That one was unexpected for me, but I supposed it shouldn't have been.

To those of us who really paid attention, yes.

You can’t cover the entire spectrum of an issue in a single bite — as important as all the points are. Sometimes it is important to nail down just one point at a time.

Too bad most Americans don’t know what illegals cost us, or there would be no amnesty spoken of .

Most Americans listen to the leftist media who tell them that ILLEGAL aliens are an important link in our economy. We’ve all heard how w/o them a head of lettuce would cost $10. I would rather pay those costs then the costs of supporting the ILLEGAL hordes.

In this case, pointing out how Marco Rubio is not speaking as a great conservative we should believe but as someone who has fallen into Washington double-speak, and whose opinions on amnesty do not deserve to be believed.

He’s committing political suicide so fine by me. Now we won’t have to fight off his 2016 presidential bid.

“seduced by the establishment”

Hardly. Marco’s always been pro-amnesty, so nobody had to seduce him. Some conservatives just turned a blind eye to it, because they are in love with the idea of having a conservative spokesman with a darker complexion.

Actually, I don't agree with that assessment. The paramount issue is securing the border and in reality - yes, reality - nothing else matters a hill of beans until that is done. Voting rights, welfare, actual citizenship cannot be allowed to happen, but if we don't secure the border, it won't matter a single bit what we think about the other issues, because we'll insure the election of the party THAT WILL NEVER CLOSE THE BORDER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - MEANING WE LOSE GAME SET, MATCH by definition.

” We’ve all heard how w/o them a head of lettuce would cost $10”

The actual added cost for non-illegals to pick lettuce is about 10 cents.

The cost to our economy for illegals is probably close to 500 billion per year, if you factor everything in.

Well think about this: we must secure the border. We should cut off all govt bennies. We should deport felons as arrested. If we did those three things, this problem would self correct in a matter of years, and would immediately improve our economy dramatically. And we can NEVER allow voting rights or actual citizenship.

HOWEVER: As for the other issue, there’s these two bothersome items known as “supply and demand” and “time.” For 60 years, supply and demand have brought 10,15, 20 million people, whatever, into our system. If they were to magically disappear for whatever reason, there would be huge ramifications that would penalize legal born and bred Americans. It’s not just the price of lettuce. It might be the availability of lettuce actually, but that’s not important per se. What’s important to remember is that nothing happens in an economy in a vacuum.

Just something to think about.

About 3% of ILLEGAL aliens in this country pick produce. Of the remaining 97% who work, most have taken jobs that used to belong to American citizens.

George W. Bush used to repeat that tired old like that they are doing jobs Americans won't do. I've been a contractor in SoCal for over 30 years and I see fewer and fewer Americans working construction. The trades have been taken over by Mexican "contractors" who hire only ILLEGALs. It's an unfair advantage they have over contractors like me who still pay a fair wage to Americans but it's one that I can do little about.

All true.
