I’ve never eaten a plantain, that I know of. What do they taste like. (Please don’t say -it tastes like chicken)
They look like miniature bananas right?
They taste a lot like bananas, but you have to cook them for quite a while.
Yes, they look like small bananas. I’ve only had them fried. They’re like banana flavored potato chips. I bet fresh plantains would make a good variation on bananas foster.
Plantains are larger than your standard Chiquita or Dole banana (Cavendish banana). All bananas that you purchase at the grocery store are an actual cross between a banana and a plantain but have more banana in them than plantain . They are crossed because pure strains have huge seeds in them
All commercially grown plantains have banana crossed into them for the same reason (you don't want to break teeth biting into huge hard seeds ) They do taste like chicken (kidding) seriously taste depends on how ripe they are when you cook them (they are not eaten raw ) A green plantain does not taste at all like a banana , they are starchy like a potato and if you slice them thin and cook them like a potato chip they sort of taste like a potato chip but a lot more flavorful .
A really ripe plantain (you have to let them turn yellow then let the yellow get a lot of black spots ) is sliced thin and fried and they are much sweeter than a regular banana . Hard to describe the taste but imagine pouring syrup on a banana , might sound gross but they are incredibly good .
The short fat green bananas are Jamaican bananas . They are also a cross between a banana and a plantain but have more plantain in them than regular grocery store bananas (not quite as much as standard plantain ) Since they have more plantain they are very starchy and need to be cooked before eating . These are usually boiled while green . Taste is hard to describe but it does not taste at all like a regular banana .
