He said he wouldnt do this unless the school asked him to withdraw. According to the article, the school says they did not ask. So he backed down despite a specific promise not to. Your conclusion presumes the truthfulness of the school's statement, which should not be considered a "given".

Maybe you don’t recall what he said when this subject first came up a month or so ago. He said he’d have to be *publicly* disinvited before he backed down. I must have missed the story where the school did that. Do you have a link?
