Amid the myriad questions and theories behind the ammunition shortage currently being experienced across the country, manufacturers have gone on the record to say they are producing as much as they can and are working to produce even more.
Hornady ammunition, makers of some of the most popular self-defense ammo for concealed carry applications, explained it this way: "We are producing as much as we can, much more than last year, which was a lot more than the year before, etc. No one wants to ship more during this time than we do."
The demand for Hornady's ammo is so great that they've "added presses, lathes, CNC equipment, [and] people and space." They are producing many popular items "24 hours a day" and "several hundred employees work overtime every week" to make as much ammo as possible.
Black Hills Ammunition president Jeff Hoffman is seeing the same demand Hornady is experiencing. He says the only ammo that isn't absolutely flying out the door are some of the rarer, larger caliber hunting rounds.
Supplies of 9mm, 45 acp, 40 S&W, and .223 are scarce in the marketplace, and where they can be found, they are being snatched up by desperate consumers as they are unloaded off trucks at stores like Wal-Mart & Gander Mountain.
So why the shortage? Ammo producers like Hornady say the cause isn't government orders but a "politically-induced buying panic." Although producers say they've seen buying panics in the past, nothing compares to what we're experiencing now.

The price for ammunition at the local ranges is exorbitant, but they are the only one’s with any. It’s a good deal for them...they sell firearms and then if you want to use them, they’ve got the ammo. They discourage using home-made, but as long as you don’t rent a weapon from them, they can’t really do anything about it.
Same with .30-40 Krag. Even in a normal year, it was mostly out of stock except for a few months around deer season.
Of course things would have to be pretty bad to be forced to break out the Krag.
Or restrict shipments across state lines or any one of a dozen other coups they can attempt.
Popular powder supplies have always been up and down, but there has been a whole lot of people taking up handloading.
A friend of mine that wants to take up handloading is working in Oregon. He said the west coast has a better supply of everything than what he’s seen here in Texas.
went into WalMart yesterday. Shelves are bare except for 5 boxes of 410 and 3 boxes of 20ga bird shot.
Long term storage of gasoline (and to a lesser extent, food) is more problematic.
.38spl and .44spl is cheaper to used for practice than .357mag and .44mag.
“if it goes to food or gas thats when youll need your ammo”
very true
The title should be reworded to say “..Manufacturers Producing ‘24 Hours a Day’ to ..Supply the Same Small Handful of Guys Who Show Up Every Tuesday Morning at Walmart and Just Happen to All Have Resale Accounts On Ebay And Other Online Shopping Websites.” There...fixed it.
I have some .308 inbound from a source I've never used before, but then you can't be too picky these days. They seem like nice folks except for that "death to the infidels!" stuff... ;-)
For perishable items like bread, panic buying will stop when people realize they have more than they are likely to use before it goes bad.
For non-perishables like ammo, panic buying will stop once people realize they have a lifetime's supply. I'm not currently buying, since I stocked up a while back.
.22 is relatively cheap, and a .22 to the head will stop a rioter just as quick as a .308 to the head. And your supply will last longer.
.
“...22 lr box of 500 used to run about 20-25 bucks....”
I remember $8-10-a-Brick of Remington “Golden” .22LRs, back in the late 90s. I also remember cases of 6,250 Remington .22LR for $98, back in the mid-80s, at gun shows.
Exactly. Waiting for the storm to pass...
Amazing how many people don’t know how to make bread...
“What I can’t figure out is the panic on .22 LR ammo.”
This may help you understand why people are buying up .22 ammo. Plus, everybody has at least one .22 rifle/pistol.
Very informative post on just how effective this little round can be!

The shortage isn’t nearly as bad as the jacked-up prices.
