The fact that history majors (not to mention the rest of the student body) are not required to take one class in American history is especially shameful considering the noble service rendered to his country by a past Bowdoin alumnus and professor, Joshua Chamberlain. A Medal of Honor recepient, then-Major Chamberlain led the 20th Maine in its valiant defense of Little Roundtop at Gettysburg, holding a badly stretched and undermanned line at the extreme right flank of the Union forces. Down to almost no ammunition and heavily outnumbered, Chamberlain led (from the front, Obama take note) his men in a charge that routed the Confederates and held Little Roundtop.
I’ll bet none of today’s “history” majors from Bowdoin even know about Gettysburg or the many Bowdoin alumni who served their country in the Civil War.
Bowdoin is a highly selective liberal arts college ranked 1th on Forbes list of top colleges. That means they compete with Harvard, Yale, Williams, Dartmouth, etc.
Speaks volumes on where the state of our higher institutions are.
