The speed and deadliness of recent high-profile shootings have prompted police departments to recommend fleeing, hiding or fighting in the event of a mass attack, instead of remaining passive and waiting for help.
The shift represents a sea change, said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, which recently held a meeting in Washington to discuss shootings like those in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo.

>>people at the scene of an attack have a better chance of survival if they take an active stance rather than waiting to be rescued by the police, <<
Translation: You’re on your own.

Defend yourself? That concept will take more than a “sea change” in attitude.
Why, what if I hit the wrong person before I get the bad guy? (better that the bad guy kill 30 than I stop him after one bad shot, saving 25).
nsah
You mean there used to be a different plan than, if you get caught up in a mass killing at the mall, "run, hide, or figh"?
Good Lord, what was the old plan, line up, show ID if requested, there was no "run, or hide"?
Duh indeed. The passengers on Flight 93 figured that out really quickly. In a classroom or theatre, 30 ten-year old’s who were willing to bite would quickly overwhelm a shooter if they all charged him at the same time. Some of the ten-year olds would die. But most would live. Better than the alternative.
What tactics do I use, unrinating on myself, or pointing to the nearest “gun free zone” sign?
In two classrooms, the students and instructors tried to hide or play dead after Mr. Cho entered. Nearly all were shot, and most died. In a third classroom, Prof. Liviu Librescu,a Holocaust survivor, told his students to jump out the second-story window while he tried to hold the classroom door shut, delaying Mr. Cho from coming in. Professor Librescu was killed, but many of the students survived, and only three were injured by gunfire. In another classroom, where the students and teacher blocked the door with a heavy desk and held it in place, Mr. Cho could not get in, and everyone lived.
The take-home message is that youre not helpless...
Interesting stuff ...
It’s a see change....
See, if you stand still you will absolutely die.
If you fight back or run to safety you will live.
You forgot to complete your thought.
“You’re on your own” - because a Tyrannical Government disarmed you.
The best form of active defense is for a concealed carrying person to shoot back at the attacker.
Their plan was that as many people as possible should be “locked” into the cafeteria, where we would be “protected” by our unarmed Wackenhut security guards.
I thought, yeah, great idea, turn 20 dead into 200 dead.
I made my own plan.
Sprint away from the building as fast as I could run.
For several months after that, I would always look around every room I was in for something I could use to smash an escape hole through one of the windows.
Yep. One who has spent some time recently at the range.

Typical liberal dumb ass, including the dumb ass idiots at the NY Slimes.
What is their solution for fighting back, throwing erasers & chalk at the crazed (liberal) lunatic mass killer's? What a bunch of stupid, dumb ass idiots!
Hey, NY Slimes & Chuck Wexler, how 'bout you endorse CCW and actually fighting back & firing back with REAL guns & real bullets.
I think my 9mm would give me more of a fighting chance, rather than erasers & chalk!
What a bunch of liberal dumb ass idiots! No wonder our country is going down the sh_tter, with liberal idiots and their liberal "logic".
Good for you. It’s not unlike defensive driving. You have to know your capabilities, and those of your car and an understanding of physics. :)
Yes. All people carrying a concealed weapon have a responsibility to be well practiced with said weapon.
Last week, I had occasion to call my local cops. I called the regular dispatch line, not 911 to report two twenty-something young men I didn’t recognize, dressed in gray hoodies and jeans, walking down the middle of our street. They seemed to be together b/c they were talking to each other, while walking slowly, going part way into driveways and along sides of houses. To me, they appeared to be looking for an open side door, or keys in a car....I just didn’t know. I requested a cruiser to swing by to *check them out*. Turns out I was home alone with my grand daughter. I checked to be sure the Super Vinci 12-GA had shells in it and waited....and waited...and waited. 25 minutes passed and the cops came by. 25 minutes! An eternity....in which *anything* could happen.
Wish the author of this article was with me to see why *waiting* for the cops is BS.
And the importance of the 2A...maybe there would be a convert. [I know...I’m a dreamer.]
