WASHINGTON - Could Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey be a Republican bridge who helps secure a deal on background checks on guns?
His office confirmed Friday that Toomey, a strong Second Amendment advocate, was in discussions on pending gun bills that have struggled to gain traction with Republicans and many pro-gun Democrats in the Senate.
"Sen. Toomey and his staff are talking to a lot of folks - both in Pennsylvania and in the Capitol - on the issue of guns in the hopes that we get to an approach that works," his spokeswoman wrote in an e-mail.
There was no agreement as of Friday afternoon, and it was not immediately clear how close any deal might be. But word of Toomey's role set off intense interest in his stance from both sides of the gun debate.
Politico reported that Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) had reached out to Toomey to try to find a GOP partner on a bill requiring background checks for gun buyers, a measure that has faltered in the face of bipartisan resistance. The website said the two senators had exchanged draft proposals since talks began Wednesday. (Toomey and Manchin previously teamed up on shared efforts on environmental and energy policy).
FShortly after news broke about the discussions on guns, Mayor Nutter and former Gov. Ed Rendell announced that they, along with the gun-control group CeaseFirePA, would gather outside Toomey's Philadelphia office Tuesday to urge him to back "commonsense gun legislation . . . especially the expansion of the background-check system."

Exile those bums to Cuba or North Korea for a couple decades: a good strong dose of socialism might help them get over their anti-Second Amendment bigotry.
Do you own firearms? Did you know there are over 20,000 federal, state and local gun laws? Do you know them all? Are you in full compliance with all of the laws?
Do you know if your security detail knows, and is in full compliance with all of the laws? You do know the laws change in each jurisdiction you travel, right?
Mr. Toomey, I know you are a busy man, so when you get a chance, please answer the above questions.
Thanking you in advance,

Sandy Hook may bring us universal background checks. The next mass shooting will convert these background checks into full blown registration. The next mass shooting will bring some form of confiscation.
Would be nice to pout a moratorium on all new laws until the old ones are properly vetted and either purged or deemed worthy of enforcing. Also, make it a crime to propose a law that exempts politicians from it and purge all of those that currently exist - might purge the ranks of a number of career pols once the bennies dry up.
Just another Pubbie politician who “bends over” without a fight.
Not one dime for anyone’s re-election that votes yes on any unconstitutional laws.
These are “Create the news you want” stories. Put out these stories to put pressure on: McCain, Toomey, Manchin, whoever you think you can sway.
I believe these are stories designed to put MSM pressure on these guys to get them to do what the MSM wants. With the new media, as illustrated by this thread, it can have the opposite effect.
Proves to me even more that Santorum knew what he was doing. Santorum 2016!!!!
Toomey will not cave.
If he is in talks, he is collecting information about the strength of the opposition and their intended tactics.
He will also be able to say he reached out, but they were unwilling to compromise.
It is a brilliant strategy to turn the tables and undercut Schumer.
Ping for later
The idiots in the Senate can posture all they want. Anything they send over to the House is DOA.
Arlen Specter was better than Toomey?

If not toomey, then certainly some other sellout republican-
Gun control IS goign to sweep this nation- the ball is now rolling with colorado connecticut ny and other states ALREADY violating hte constitution- other states will see that htey got away with it without hte public fightign to retain their rights, and they too will jump on board and ANY state that doesn’t will eventually be shamed into acceptign gun control by the left- Where are the judges puttign an immediate halt to the UNSONSTITUTIONAL laws that have been passed on colo conn and ny and othe states?
Yet another warning of why “fiscal conservatives” backed by the Club for Growth, who eschew “social issues” are fake conservatives, who eventually come to see the entire Constitution as a “social issue” they can ignore to perpetually remain in power.
I like your optimism. Hope you’re right.
I know Pat Toomey. He will not betray us unless some other force is at work.
