A judge said Friday he wants a trial before the end of the year for a teenager charged with fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby in the face during a street robbery two weeks ago.
*snip*
The judge denied Elkins' request for bond, saying he was concerned the suspect might flee if he was released.
Elkins faces life in prison if convicted of malice murder in the March 21 slaying of Antonio Santiago.
*snip*
The suspect's 78-year-old great grandfather, McKinley Elkins Jr., took the witness stand and promised the judge he would personally look after his great grandson if he was released from jail pending trial.
"I truly believe, deep down in my heart, that he will be a gentleman from this day forward," the elder Elkins said.
But just how well the great grandfather knew Elkins was called into question when he was unable to tell District Attorney Jackie Johnson where the teenager went to school, whether he had any tattoos, or even where he lived.
Roderic Nohilly, a Glynn County police detective, told the judge Elkins had several tattoos -- a teardrop by his right eye, his mother's name on his right arm, a skull on his abdomen and the words "Thug Life" across his chest.
Nohilly said Elkins' tattoos contained symbols affiliated with gangs.

he’s 78 and he’s the great grandpa of the killer? Some teen age pregnancies in that family?
Let me look into it and see if there is a way around it.
That’s not happening to me...check your Freep mail.
Amazing!!
Kill a defenseless 13-month old baby, get a life sentence if convicted, and you get to be coddle, nutured, and cared for by US taxpayers the rest of your life, and maybe they will let you out for good behavior by you?
Also free medical and dental. A warm bed to sleep in. 3 meals a day. Free cable tv. Free parties during the holidays.
And best of all, no work required! What a deal!!
He was 61 when his great-grandson was born, meaning the average age at birth along that chain was just over 20. Not at all unusual in human history. I knew an early-twenties, third-generation, Sicilian-American truck driver when I was growing up in Queens who knocked up his 16 year old girl friend. They got married and eventually moved to Vermont. He later got an associates degree in engineering degree and they had a pretty good life. I lost touch with him and his family but caught up to him on facebook. He's in his mid fifties and still married to the same woman. I told my wife that "Frank" and "Maria" were living in Vermont and still married.
She asked, "Is her father still alive?" "No, but her brothers are.", I replied.
Not one.
The baby was white. People have asked what the motive was. One obvious potential answer is hatred of white people.
Not one word.
Think of the firestorm of coverage that would occur if the races were reversed.
The perfidy of the MSM is must be overcome if the Republic is to survive.

of he crime should be “of the crime”.
I have been a great grandmother since 2008 and I turned 69 in January. Some were very critical of that fact but I told them I can get down on the floor and play with them. I think I am truly blessed to have the 5 and 4 years old great granddaughers. They help fill the void left by the deaths of my daughter in 2004, my brother, husband and bil in 2006 and my mom in. 2007. God knows what He is doing. We are really blessed.
Wow, my great-grandparents would all have been in their hundreds before I was born. I guess I’m from a line of old parents (now including myself).
Yeh right -- just like you were looking after him on the morning when he shot a baby point blank.
Frankly, I think it is kind of neat having greats at my age. They know their great grandmother which is more than I did. I only knew one grandmother but I can not remember much about her. My mom died in January, 2007 just 3 months short of her 103rd birthday. She had great, great grandchildren. I am into genealogy and most of my ancestors lived to their 90’s. My mom was in her 40’s when I was born and she had my sister 17 months later. They had 3 kids skipped nearly10 years and had us. People would argue with her about us. They told her we had to be her grandchildren. LOL . I do have a nephew who was born 2 years after I was born.
