My guess is they could have pulled it successfully off the reef, but it would have damaged the coral, and in our new world, the Navy would rather sacrifice millions of dollars of equipment than “harm the environment”.

Hmm, their concern was for the coral since it was a living organism, yet the same people probably don't give a damn about a human baby being killed by having its brains sucked out..............

” One of his sister-ships ended up on a reef right after the war - but that was due to a huge typhoon that sank/grounded hundreds of ships.”

That wouldn’t have been the one that hit Okinawa would it? My Dad was there and took a bunch of pictures of beached ships. He hid in a cave for three days while it blew out.

You guess would have been incorrect.

“The hulls of WWII Minesweepers were 100% wood. There was steel/iron/aluminum above decks but the hulls were 100% wood.”

You learn something new every day. Thanks.

Charts? GPS failure? Dereliction of duty? Sabotage?

So far, the Navy blames faulty navigational maps for causing the ship to run aground.

In this day and age the Navy is still using faulty navigational maps???

For a chilling reminder of how the perfumed princes in the Navy scapegoat line officers, look up the story of the USS Indianapolis.

Last week, the Navy chopped the ship up into sections and removed it, turning a valuable ship into scrap metal

"It's a miracle!"

How did $300M minesweeper...?

Good question. $300 million? The UK built the (slightly smaller) Hunt class MCM in the same period for betweem £30(1980 estimate) and £60 (unit cost to build a new one in the 90s) - say a quarter to a third the cost of the American ship.

Someöne's been skimming.

Charles, your backwards clairvoyance is definitely working ... because that is exactly what happened. Environmental regulations forbade even putting out an anchor!

The initial grounding was a minor incident and the ship could have been saved. The skipper and officers are being hung out to dry. However, let's face it, any grounding is is usually a life sentence in a dweeb job w/o promotion.

PS: My yachting pals will be the first to tell you I am a passed master at running aground. As an expert I can advise our Navy that I would recommend running aground in the Gulf of Mexico, rather than on those granite ledges in the Gulf of Maine. Ouch, baby!

I have to remember not to post to threads like this. If you really know stuff, you probably aren’t really supposed to talk about it.

O Charles, Post away!

If the choice is between reef coral structures and the the ships of our fleet, why Mother Gaia must be favored. I attribute this tragic grounding to the promotion of white, non-lesbian officers to command positions by George W. Bush, and in my heart of hearts, I know that this attack on a helpless endangered reef will add to Global Warming, coastal flooding, increased childhood obesity, and the innate cruelty of Republicans to the LGBT communities, minority groups, and single moms.

Fear not, Obama will save the huge manatee!
