I had a breakthrough on someone in my genealogy and was searching records this morning when I got up. I was reading an 1870 Census looking for a GGG Grandfather when I saw a woman with 4 kids, all 6 and under. Three of them had her last name. The 1 month old said "Bastard - Not Named". I nearly fell off my chair. My daughter pointed out that it was 1870. How delicate we've become!

Yes. The other thing is that they didn’t always name or christen children right away because they didn’t always live. The 2 things together show how much different things are now. Some good, some not. LOL

It was surprising to see how many children under 1 year said "Not Named". So when they talked to their babies what did they call them? Hey No Name?

I guess they called them “baby” or “sweet little boy/girl” or “cutie pie”. Sounds awful. They must have been saving the names.

It breaks your heart. How awful to have a baby and not name it because you don't know if it will live.

My GG Grandparents had 6 kids. 3 lived.
