Thats because the media can descend on Aurora, Columbine and Newtown secure in the odds of another mentally deranged individual blasting away at them is almost nil. The hoods of Chicago is a different story. They would risk getting shot. Same reason the media is willing to go after Christians and not the Moslems.
There is no competition in journalism anymore. They move in tribes picking the nits off each other and hurling dung at any who get in their way.
