I just watched a documentary on netflix the other day on the guy Portland drafted over Michael Jordan.It was Sam Bowie, who played for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Compound shin fractures happen to MMA fighters regularly. More to the guy doing the kicking than the one on the receiving end.
My idea is that it was a sort of miscalculation, meaning that the usual intuition of running and jumping was off. I think he was a little higher or lower than he realized and the floor met his leg suddenly and he “jammed” his leg very severely.
I think we all have experienced surprises like this on a lesser scale. Anyway, that’s the only explanation I can think of.
I x-rayed a lot of compound fractures in my lifetime. Thankfully numbness from nerve damage settles around the fracture site and relieves some of the pain
