~More and more, Americans — including many conservatives — now believe that individuals should do whatever they want so long as it isn't hurting anybody else.~

Again, this is libertarianism, not conservatism. Conservatism believes in a civil society limited by minimal laws strictly enforced[, along with the teaching of a strong moral code against libertinism.]

"so long as it isn't hurting anybody else" sounds to me like minimal laws - did you have something less "minimal" in mind?

Yeah, the part you left out:

"along with the teaching of a strong moral code against libertinism."

I left that out because I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that you weren't including the teaching of a strong moral code against libertinism in those "minimal" laws. Is it in fact your proposal that laws should teach a strong moral code against libertinism? How would laws do that teaching?

I am sorry, but I am just not getting your question. Not trying to be rude, but where is this leading exactly? If I have not been clear I would surely like to make myself more understandable.

Perhaps if you were to read my two essays on ideology: #6 Tyranny Versus Liberty and #7 Finally! A Scale of Ideologies that Makes Sense
