Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota intends to announce plans to retire when his term ends next year, Democratic officials told The Associated Press on Monday.
Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2006 and later returned to the Senate and won re-election in 2008 while sometimes using a motorized scooter.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to pre-empt Johnson's formal announcement, expected Tuesday in South Dakota.
His departure gives Republicans a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in a deeply conservative state. Johnson is the fifth Democratic incumbent to announce plans not to run again in 2014, joining Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

I hope conservatives TAKE OVER the Senate in 2014....Obama's allies are quitting....
"...Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey....
I think all of these except MAYBE Jersey are winnable for Republicans.
I urge us to focus MORE on destroying the Democrat candidates in these states and replacing them with conservative Republicans....
It’s Mike Rounds to lose.
Ten democrat freshmen and five democrat retirements.

I beet the GOP runs Demo-lite candidates to “win over” their supporters!
Rounds is a RINO from what I’ve heard. So is Capito. Regardless, those are two seats that are essentially guaranteed at this point, and we’ll offset the RINO imbalance by kicking out Graham and Enzi.
New Jersey... No chance. Whorealdo might have a shot, but I don’t want that POS or his gay bar mustache near the senate. Iowa is the one to watch. Steve King is preparing to run for that seat, but it’s going to be tough in a state that went for Zero.
We’ve also dropped Taxby Chambliss, being replaced by Broun, another conservative victory.
With any luck, we could bump off Cochran in Mississipi, and replace Johanns with a conservative.
Pryor might as well quit. Arkansas is ours now. I really, really, really want to eject Landreiu. Begich is a question mark at this point. Miller won’t beat him. Don’t know if Treadwell will be competitive enough, but this rat is vulnerable. Warner seems safe, inexplicably.
2014 is a big opportunity. We have to seize it.
I beet they don’t. ;-)

And I hope we get QUALITY conservatives through the primaries in these states. For damn sure the GOPe will be pushing their RINO candidates. Come on conservatives, let’s not form circular firing squads again—rally behind the best conservative in each primary race. Let’s not split our vote.
And if we get good conservative candidates, let’s make sure they get some training so they don’t make dumb-ass mistakes and fall for the liberal media’s traps. So many did this last cycle.
And folks, support organizations such as the Senate Conservatives Fund and DO NOT contribute to the RNC or other RINO organizations—they are proving to be enemies of the true conservatives who have worked so hard to support them.

Senate banking chair Tim Johnson to announce retirement (Republican pickup opportunity?)
The mark of a true conservative, you only bet on sure things and fixed horse races.
I wonder if it gets nasty between Stephanie Hyphen Sandlin and Johnson’s son? They both feel that they are the heir apparent so somebody is in for a disappointment. In twenty months, here’s hoping that both are disappointed and scarred from internecine battles and an electoral defeat.
It was a republican seat before Johnson beat Senator Larry Pressler(R) S.D.
Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the other thread it was speculated that Sen. Johnson’s son may run for the seat. I don’t know how true that is nor his chances if he did.
A GOP pickup would be nice.
I’ll bet the dems come up with a ditzy diva hollywood hack to run.
From the other thread:
snip
Political analysts expect Johnson’s son, Brendan Johnson, who is South Dakota’s U.S. attorney, to emerge as a potential Democratic candidate in the 2014 election. The younger Johnson has not announced any formal plans to seek the Senate seat.
Former Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, who lost a bid for reelection in 2010, is another leading choice to run if the incumbent senator retires.

Awwww, cute little "moderate" Stephie wants to be a Senator.
None of the retiring Demo seats are competitive. And SD is never a sure thing for a Republican Senate candidate, governor maybe, but not senator.
Just find a way to stop the vote fraud on the reservations, and it won’t be a problem.
???
Personally, I would not wanting to be running as a member of the White House party in a 6th year election. An ugly primary between Johnson Junior and Herseth-Sandlin would only assure an easier victory for ex-Gov. Rounds. The only potential impediment is if Rep. Kristi Noem gets in and gives Rounds a headache in the primary.
