That's if it's from despair. She may have been angry and determined to send a message to a specific person. Assuming she was going to go to somebody's house to do that she probably wasn't going to down sleeping pills and wait to drift off. If she actually was going to show up at his house, she'd want to do something sudden, violent, and potent emotionally to get the message through.
Without knowing this women’s character or her mental state prior to her death, this could very well be true.
