I am a pilot and I can tell you right now there are 100’s of airports that currently have control towers that will operate just fine without them.
There are, however, some curiosities that surround the selection process.
Sacramento Executive Airport, an FAA tower of which is to be closed, is only a few miles from Mather Airport, a tower which will remain open (unless I misread.)
If I were to estimate, Exec gets over 10X the number of operations than does Mather. Mather gets larger craft, but Exec gets its share of jets, and a mix of aircraft types (and a proximity to the State Capital) that would recommend to a rational person that it remain open.
That said, we'll do just fine without the tower.

Heads up.”
