Reuters) - A decision to return two Italian marines accused of murdering fishermen to stand trial in India stirred anger in Italy on Friday and calls for Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi to resign. Mario Monti's caretaker government on Thursday reversed a March 11 decision not to send the marines back from a home visit after Rome secured a promise from New Delhi that the two would not face the death penalty if convicted, officials said. The marines, part of a military security team protecting a tanker from piracy, are accused of shooting two fishermen off the coast of Kerala in February 2012.

Obama would do this to our Marines without a moment’s hesitation.

I would much rather ask what would Obama do if there were foreign Marines shooting at out civilians in our waters.

Has anyone asked if the “fishermen” were pirates? Nothing in the story even touched on it.

Not according to the article, according to Italy....

“But Italy had challenged that decision, arguing that the shooting took place in international waters and that the two should face any trial at home.”

Did India challenge the assertion? It doesn't say so here.

I don't know anything about this case other than whats here but it seems to me that has a great deal to do with the correct jurisdiction for this case.

It does. Read the whole paragraph.

“The (Indian) Supreme Court ruled in January that India had jurisdiction to try the marines. But Italy had challenged that decision.....”

Apparently the fishermen were Syrian Orthodox Christians from Kerala. I’d highly doubt the assertion that they might have been pirates.

I dont care if they are Syrian Orthodox or Rastafarians. Question is whether they were pirates or not. Apparently they weren’t. Even Italy isn’t making the claim they were pirates.

Obviously India believes they have jurisdiction.

My question is did the incident happen in international waters. I see no claim from India that it wasn't.

Soldiers kill people and break things.

That's the way the world works. Wouldn't have it any other way.

India claims it happened on Indian waters and Italy claims it happened on international waters.
