News of his purchase was quickly met with stinging rebukes from gun rights supporters on social media, who called Kelly a hypocrite for buying the gun in the first place.

“What a two faced coward you are Kelly — it’s ok for you to own one and protect your family but not the rest of us?” one Facebook poster wrote.

The group founded by Kelly and Giffords, Americans for Responsible Solutions, is pushing for a ban on high-powered semiautomatic weapons such as the AR-15 rifle that he bought, as well as high-capacity magazines.

I'm getting tired of this line too. The 5.56 military round or the .223 rem round are not considered high powered cartridges by those who know firearms. It just sounds good so the media uses this lie to inflame a story.

When compared to either past military or modern hunting calibers the round fired by most AR-15’s is anemic.

Many states do not allow it to be used on deer sized game while hunting. Yes it can kill people but it is a relatively low powered caliber. It is easy on the shooter because it has very little recoil. It doesn't come anywhere near the power/impact energy, or effective range of the .308 or 30-06 calibers that our military used for the 50 years prior to the introduction of the M-16 in all of our military branches.

Expecting the truth from the media is a bit too much to ask for.
